A space gun, sometimes called a Verne gun because of its appearance in From the Earth to the Moon by Jules Verne, is a method of launching an object into space using a large gun- or cannonlike structure. The HARP project stated objective was to develop a large gun to shoot things into space. The Space Gun is a magic weapon which autofires quick green-colored lasers. In the early 1960s, Donald Mordell had the view that the island of Barbados would have been the ideal place for such a project. One of those guns is still in Yuma, Arizona. Ballistic engineer Gerald Bull—later assassinated while working on a space gun for the Iraqi government—designed the HARP gun. High Altitude Research Project (Harp Gun) The paramount goal of the HARP (High Altitude Research Project) was the establishment of a satellite launcher. In the 1960s, however, a Canadian visionary proposed the radical idea to simply shoot through the atmosphere — with a giant space gun. Wrong. The HARP space gun was set up at Paragon just to the east of the runway of what was then Seawell Airport – jointly funded by McGill University, Canada who administered the project and the USA Army Research and Development Center. There are two interesting footnotes to the HARP space gun story… I had been told that the Barbados HARP gun was the only one left. It turns out that the Yuma gun was subsequently cleaned up and prepped for indefinite storage in anticipation that it might one day be used again for High Altitude Research.
