Nostalgia is a powerful and generally positive human condition.
Nostalgia can be channelled to promote nationalism through the projection of emotionally laden symbolism which is then asserted to represent ‘our way of life,’ making the nation–state into an ‘imagined community. Science of Nostalgia It was first thought to be a “neurological disease of essentially demonic cause,” but it turns out that nostalgia is good for your brain. Nostalgia is not an emotional state, but rather “a longing for a sanitized impression of the past,” according to Alan R. Hirsh in “Nostalgia: a Neuropsychiatric Understanding.” Rather than seeing the past for what it truly was, we recall it as a conglomeration of various memories, filtering negative ones out to integrate the positive ones which creates nostalgia. And there’s science to prove it.
