The roseate spoonbill is the only spoonbill endemic (native) to the Western Hemisphere (Bjork and Powell 1996).

Roseate Spoonbills are one of my favorite shorebirds and one that I seek each time I travel to beaches on the Gulf Coast. Feeds by sifting through water with bill shaped like big, flat spoon. Roseate Spoonbill – The Roseate Spoonbill is the oddball in this bird family. The colorful pink roseate spoonbill is unquestionably the emblematic bird of Florida. At sunrise, the birds compete with the morning colors as they depart individually or in small flocks for the mainland.
