Cats have their first estrous (reproductive) cycle when they reach puberty.

The traditional age to spay a cat has been around six months of age, however, research in the past 20 years reveals there may be advantages to spaying before the first heat cycle. A cat is in heat, or enters her estrus cycle, when she’s fertile and ready to mate. They can come into heat every two to three weeks, for seven to 10 days, beginning in early spring and winding down in late autumn as the hours of daylight decrease (a cat needs at least 12 hours of daylight for a normal cycle). You can calm her during this phase a few different ways. The estrus cycle is normal. Female cats who are ready to breed and are in heat are known as “queens.” Estrus is normally seasonal, as queens go into heat in the spring and in the fall.

Cats are polyestrus breeders, meaning they can go through multiple heat periods in a year (and can have as many as five litters in that year). The estrous heat cycle or reproductive cycle of cats has four distinct stages: anestrous, proestrus, estrus and metestrus. These heat cycles may start as early as the fourth or fifth month of a kitten's life and will continue until she is either bred or spayed. Cat estrus begins as animals reach sexual maturity, usually at about six months of age, although some cats will go into heat as early as four months and others as late as 10 to 12 months.

Cats are referred to as "polyestrous," which means that they will go into heat cycles periodically during their fertile years. What we consider “ in heat,” when a cat can become pregnant, lasts about ten days to two weeks.

A female can go into heat as early as four months of age. There are several stages to the cat’s heat cycle. During this period, a cat will become restless, hungry and may appear more affectionate than usual. Every cat is affected differently. The heat cycle, called estrus, begins around the time a kitten reaches 6 months of age, but it can begin earlier or later. On average, puberty, or sexual maturity, first occurs in cats at about six months of age, but this can vary slightly by time of year. The estrous cycle is better known as a cat's heat cycle.
