The First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff is the professional head of the entire Royal Navy.
He was Governor from 1969 and was appointed Lord-Lieutenant of the island by the Queen in 1974 when it was given county status. Originally the title was the Senior Naval Lord to the Board of Admiralty when the post was created in 1689. This was the first time in Royal Naval history that a father and son had both attained such high rank.
