The feed lot turns out to be an oasis for Cooper’s Hawks. Notice around the middle of this sequence of still shots that he drops a small portion of his food and tries to figure out what happened to it. Among the bird world’s most skillful fliers, Cooper’s Hawks are common woodland hawks that tear through cluttered tree canopies in high speed pursuit of other birds. You’re most likely to see one prowling above a forest edge or field using just a few stiff wingbeats followed by a glide. However, the rate of change in eye color is variable and cannot be used to definitively age an accipiter.
I know it may be difficult to believe some of these images are of Cooper's Hawks, and that's why it's worth sharing these individuals! Cooper’s hawks have been known to use an old squirrel or other bird nest as a base. During daylight hours, they tend to preen while sitting on a perch about 11 times a day and may take about 1-20 minutes to do so. Note the streaked undertail coverts on the last Cooper's Hawk, a trait usually associated with juvenile Goshawk (even some sharpies can show this). The young hawk is wearing typical plumage for a juvenile Cooper’s Hawk. This hawk, however, was hanging out near a feed lot that contains a few large trees, watering troughs for the cattle, and most importantly for the hawk, a big population of doves. They molt into the adult plumage with a solid gray back during their second summer. The bowl of the nest is lined with outer bark torn off of nearby trees. Fresh greenery is often added to the nest. Cooper's hawks like to look good.
