What Do We Want? The goal of this step is to get the download link.
SquirrelSetup.log in C:\Users\rja\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Teams just adds these 3 lines.
A failure at this step is logged in Logs.txt. Did the Microsoft Teams team use Windows Update as their update mechanism, similar to Skype for Business and the rest of the Office Suite? I tried complete uninstall and re-installation already but it did not help. Slack and a few other widely used products have the same issues. Zip the whole folder and update the RELEASES file with the proper hash and size.
ClickOnce (by the way) is the Microsoft implementation of this approach that’s been around for years. Er, no.
By unzipping the Teams nupkg file, the location of Squirrel.exe is revealed: Teams-1.2.00.13765-full\lib\net45 Change the Squirrel.exe to your payload and make sure that is renamed Squirrel.exe. 2018-12-13 21:58:29> Program: Starting Squirrel Updater: --processStart Teams.exe. with value com.squirrel.Teams.Teams and data C:\Users\eswar.koneti\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Teams\Update.exe --processStart "Teams.exe" --process-start-args "--system-initiated" as shown below. Squirrel uses NuGet packages to create installation and update packages, which means that you probably already know most of what you need to create an installer. Unfortunately the Electron / Squirrel updater issues are not confined to Teams.
Teams downloads the update by using the download link obtained from step 1. They used Squirrel.
Windows apps should be as fast and as easy to install and update as apps like Google Chrome.
Also interesting to note that Electron have deprecated the use of Squirrel on Windows. Since a couple of days the MS Teams desktop app is not starting any more on my Windows 10 system. Squirrel is open-source and maintained on GitHub. Teams makes a web request and includes the current app version and deployment ring information. During this period, the auto-update process will update the Teams client. If not updated, users will see an in-app alert encouraging them to manually update to the latest version of Teams or, if necessary, to reach out to their IT admin to do so.
