I almost like Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors more for its presentation of culture than the actual film. Of course, it's still quite good and deserves to be seen by way more people, but it's difficult to overstate just how wonderful and rich its depiction of Ukrainian Hutsul culture is: costumes, traditions, folk music and more, every scene is infused with wonderful details of a people not well known. 3la2 is using Letterboxd to share film reviews and lists with friends.

Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors is very vivid, surreal, and a beautiful portrait of the journey of Ivan, probably inspired from Ivan's Childhood (Tarkovsky) and made as an inspiration with a completely different story--as an adaptation of the book of the same name by Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky. The acting was serviceable, effectively moving the plot along complete with some throwback silent film-style acting. Watched Dec 17, 2019. ryan :]’s review published on Letterboxd: This is quite possibly the most beautifully and impeccably shot film I have ever seen. Join here.
