Long tail is often pumped up and down, but not as consistently as Palm Warbler. In the eBird taxonomy, subspecies are referred to as an ISSF (identifiable subspecific form), and in many cases, this does involve one subspecies, in the case of Palm Warbler (Western), it refers to subspecies palmarum.
Their tails and legs are longer than most warblers contributing to the pipitlike shape. Their posture is more upright than a typical warbler and more like a pipit—especially noticeable when they are on the ground. Even the forest is quiet at the station, except for the sounds of a few song sparrows, myrtle warblers, white-throated sparrows, and our eastern phoebe fiercely defending a prime nesting spot on the back of the lab building. Despite the slow migration, some highlights this week included our first western palm warbler and a vesper sparrow. Small warbler, yellow overall with black streaks on sides and unique face pattern.
