They have well-proportioned heads, with straight profiles and wide foreheads. A lot of horses are named after their color. The Icelandic Horse is a breed apart from all other horse breeds, in more than a few aspects, and among its most celebrated features is its five natural, and unique gaits: the walk, the trot, the canter, the tölt, and the flying pace.
It was our goal to see these pure beauties during our drive around the Ring Road, and it didn't take us long before we saw plenty of horses running over the volcanic terrain. It´s a load of fun. Icelandic horses weigh between 330 and 380 kilograms and stand an average of 13 and 14 hands (52 and 56 inches, 132 and 142 cm) high, which is often considered pony size, but breeders and breed registries always refer to the Icelandic breed as horses. Not all Icelandic horses can do every gait – walk, trot and canter/gallop are the basics they all have, tölt and skeið (= pace) are extras. Icelandic horse colours There’s an old Icelandic saying – “A Good Horse Has No Colour” – but for many people the huge variety of colours in Icelandics is one of the attractions of the breed. The Icelandic Horse is legendary. A brand new color variant has appeared on an Icelandic horse called Ellert. In Iceland and other countries where Icelandic Horse are bred, the horses are given Icelandic names.
The surname is the name of the farm where the horse has been bred. Meeting the Icelandic horse, learning about how incredibly unique in the world these horses are, learning to ride them and have fun in our indoor arena, maybe do some games on horseback, enjoying Icelandic snacks and coffee/tea/hot chocolate (or even stronger drinks), soaking in the relaxing geothermal mineral bath with the water from the Langhus natural hot spring. They’re often bred for racing so those horses’ most important features that breeders look out for is temper (having a bit of a fiery temper is a plus) and how many gaits the horse can do. Every horse has a personal name, and most horses have a surname. We hope to eventually have photos of all the possible colors of the Icelandic Horse.
